Glorious June at The Moult

Salcombe certainly had the best of the weather at half term. As the east of the UK was under a blanket of cloud and northern Europe suffered rain storms, Devon was blessed with long warm days. And the good weather has continued.

The sun loungers and suntan lotion have come out by day and when we’ve got too hot we have had either the pool or the sea for a refreshing dip.

By night we have feasted on barbecues in the evening light and washed down delicious rosé.

Nothing tastes better than our home grown vegetables and the new potatoes have been wonderful with a light vinaigrette and fresh chives. Now we eagerly await the broad beans.

There is never a dull moment in the gardens at The Moult. The agapanthus are coming out creating patterns of blue and white flowers across the Italian Garden. The heavenly white poppies are gently swaying in the breeze and the butterflies and bees are creating the ambient sound backed up by the rippling waves below.

There was a buzz in the air as we watched last Sunday’s gig and rowing regatta across the Salcombe Estuary, a really impressive sight! One sailing yacht headed off on a voyage to Norway and the Arctic Circle with spectators waving them on their way. For the less ambitious it was perfect weather for paddle boarding with our friends at Sea Kayak Salcombe on South Sands Bay.

The Kingsbridge music festival was a huge success and looking ahead there should be a lots of laughs at the Bigbury Fun Run on 25 June and the Dartmouth Art and Craft Weekend at the end of the month. Wild Artichoke are doing pop up feasts at their hip warehouse hideaway and real foodies should head to The South Sands Hotel to try out their transformed menu under new chef Allister Bishop. So many simple, old fashioned pursuits and pleasures make the South Hams such a wonderful place to stay.
