So Long, Winter – Welcome, Salcombe Spring

Salcombe is beautiful in winter but far fewer people want to spend the cooler months at the seaside. Traditionally, however, Salcombe was seen as a winter holiday destination, as it never gets too cold and the light sparkling on the water amazes, whatever the season.

The past few months have been exceptionally mild and for those of us lucky enough to have ventured down to South Devon we have been treated with wonderful weather, glorious walks and outdoor swimming in December, January and February.

TV presenter Linda Barker used The Moult as a backdrop location for filmed pieces for her new series, The Home Game. She got some lovely shots of the kitchen and dining room but also filmed sequences outside in December, wearing a jacket over a lightweight dress.

Then, Jane Knight, the Travel Editor of The Times stayed at the house in mid-January and wrote an amazing feature about her time at The Moult, which included a starlit swim in the pool. In the space of a month The Moult has appeared twice in The Times, including the ’80 best places to stay in the UK’.

Musical guests staying in February had a blast with opera singers and pianists enjoying the acoustics of the sitting room, with the sound of the baby grand piano, and a roaring fire.

The house is already booked for dates in December and next Christmas, so book now for winter 2018, when the prices are far lower but the indoor and outdoor spaces remain wonderful for entertaining.

Spring at The Moult and The Wing at The Moult offers the chance for all sorts of lovely outdoor activities, such as horse riding, cliff walking, wild swimming, and sailing. If you would prefer to stay inside, Salcombe Gin School opens its doors this March to lessons at Salcombe’s own distillery. Or if you’re after something of a healthier, less alcoholic note, you could try Simply Soulful Yoga on 16th March, where ‘mocktails’ will be served after the class!
